Best Recommendations: Adult Cruises

Cruising is a great way to see the world.  At the same time, I hear that many adults don’t want to cruise because they’ve heard kids end up taking over.  While the larger mass market/contemporary cruise lines are truly family friendly, there are plenty of options for adults to enjoy an adult-oriented cruising experience.

Ultimately, there are only a few true ‘adult-only’ cruises (none of them with the US-based cruise lines).  But, there are several ways of enjoying a cruise without hordes of kids.  My advice is to choose an upscale, specialty, or river cruise line option. While these cruises still allow kids, there’s not much for the kids to do (in most cases), so the amount of kids is minimal.

Here are my best recommendations for a (mostly) kid-free cruise:

Celebrity Cruises’ Solstice Class of ships – As the premium cruise line owned by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, Celebrity is ‘Modern Luxury’.  The personality of this cruise line is urban, chic, and upscale.  There will be more families on the shorter itineraries since they do have a pretty good  kids club, so for an adult-oriented experience, stick to 7 days or longer, preferably on the Solstice Class of ships (Eclipse, Equinox, Silhouette, Solstice, and Reflection).  These ships are beautifully designed, well-equipped, and the perfect choice for urbanites who enjoy the art of see and be seen.  Click here to learn about Celebrity Cruises.

Deluxe Cruise Lines: Oceania and Azamara Club Cruises – very different from each other, both of these deluxe cruise lines have a lot to offer those looking for an adult cruising experience.  I’d consider both ‘a la carte luxury’ where you get a upscale cruising at an extraordinary value. These ships are smaller (around 700 guests) and are all about service and personalization attention.

  • Oceania – known for its cuisine, those who sail onboard Oceania will surely sail with them over and over again. Spacious staterooms, personalized attention, and sailing to exotic destinations, Oceania will not disappoint.  Click here to learn about Oceania Cruises.
  • Azamara Club Cruises – As the deluxe line owned by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, this line has evolved to be a force to be reckoned with.  With their focus on immersion experiences, Azamara sailings enjoy longer stays, more overnights, and night touring as part of its core features.  With its country club atmosphere, Azamara has emerged to be a major player for those looking for exclusivity and value.  Click here to lean about Azamara Club Cruises

Coming in 2015 - Viking Oceans!  Viking River Cruises is building an oceanliner, Viking Star, that is guaranteed to make this list of recommended adult-oriented cruises.  A mid-sized ship (928 passengers) that will offer the Viking experience at sea! The Viking Star is currently open for sale for 2015 sailings.
